Can I claim mileage and carry on travelling on the train?
The post quoted showed a £2.16 difference which is why the HMRC worker probably said it wasn't a big deal.

I also think the exact question is missing as if you asked it along the lines if "I once or twice got the modes mixed up", then I don't see HMRC coming down on you as it's not delibrate.

However if you claimed mileage for 100* journeys you took by train then it's delibrate.

*Just a figure given as an example. However if you are caught with lots of inaccurate expenses then expect a thorough investigation.
