That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. I would really recommend you expand your reading outside the the paranoid conspiracy tendency.

The media coverage after the emails were released was based on email statements quoted out of context and on unsubstantiated theories of conspiracy. The CRU emails do not show either that the science is flawed or that the scientific process has been compromised. EPA carefully reviewed the CRU emails and found no indication of improper data manipulation or misrepresentation of results.

You're fighting a losing battle pj, everyday more and more people come to the conclusion AGW is garbage. The fact that global temps are currently more than 0.3 degrees below the 30 year average and cold records being broken all over the Northern Hemisphere doesn't help your cause does it. The Moroccans woke up yesterday to see heavy snow. Snow in Morocco! and what was it Dr David Vriner said...."Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past" .

        Have a nice day.

          Here's the link again:

Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past - Environment - The Independent

However, the warming is so far manifesting itself more in winters which are less cold than in much hotter summers. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

"Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

I'm sure now pj is going to say although the journalist interviewed Dr David Vriner he then simply invented everything he said.

Let us just examine that, shall we? From a 'sceptical' viewpoint. It is a useful case history.

The claim derives from an Independent article published, erm, 12 years ago.

Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past - Environment - The Independent

Which does indeed have the headline 'Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past '. Now the Independent is a reputable newspaper, but headlines are usually written by sub-editors, so is this science story written by a science journalist? Well, no for some reason it was handed to Charles Onions, whose normal beat is business and human rights. So was it based on an academic paper or report? Well, no Onions quotes such sources as Malcolm Robinson, of the Fenland Indoor Speed Skating Club and Michael Jeacock, a Cambridgeshire local historian.

What the piece does have, though, is a handful of quotes from David Viner, an actual climate scientist.
According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".
Note that Viner, (probably interviewed over the phone) gave no timescale, the journalist added the words 'in a few years'. Now there have been two IPCC reports since the piece was published, and hundreds of other reports and forecasts, none of which projected that UK snowfall would disappear any time soon. Indeed, a warmer climate can cause more precipitation.

So this claim, which you can find all over the internet, is based not on the science, but on half a quote from a single mangled and misrepresentative piece of mainstream journalist from more than a decade ago. A piece that anyone with an ounce of actual 'scepticism' would have tossed straight in the bin.

And yet our house 'sceptics' love this piece and post it up with regularity. Makes you wonder if they really have nothing better than this to back up their case ....

A respected journalist, who would be more well qualified to report on climate science than you are.
Unless of course you can demonstate you have better qualifications.

Are we sure that some of things you're posting aren't "mangled and misrepresentative".

It was misrepresentative because the headline bears no similarity to what the science was saying at the time or since. It was mangled because it conflated quotes from a scientist with timescales added by the journalist.

I am sure Charles Onions is a fine business journalist, but this seems to be his one and only foray into 'science'.

I suppose one could write to the Independent for a correction, however I am sure the response would be why on earth are you concerned about problems with a handful of phone quotes in a piece of filler from over a decade ago?

                A very good question.

NASA GISS: Research News: Warmer and Wetter Winters in Europe and Western North America Linked to Increasing Greenhouse Gases

                  1999

Why are winters warming up so much faster over Northern Hemisphere continents than over the rest of the globe? A new study by NASA researchers in the June 3 issue of the journal Nature is the first to link the well-documented large degree of North America and Eurasia winter warming and the associated wind changes to rising greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

Drew Shindell, an atmospheric scientist from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia University, NY, found that the large warming that has occurred during Northern Hemisphere winters over the last 30 years — up to nine degrees Fahrenheit, a full 10 times warmer than the global average 0.9 degree Fahrenheit warming — is likely a result of human activities that increase greenhouse gases. Warmer winters will bring more wet weather to Europe and Western North America, Shindell said, with Western Europe the worst hit by storms coming off the Atlantic.

I seem to recall at the time, you came straight onto CUK and said 'dont panic, dont be alarmed, Viner never actually said that. Its all Onions fault. There WILL be lots of snow'

Perhaps pj could point us to the link where Dr David Viner complained that he's been misrepresented. After all he's now a laughing stock as a result of that. Presumably he did complain, did he?
