100mbit on cat5 ethernet is better than 300mbit on wifi.Originally posted by BolshieBastard View PostWhat!? And reduce the speed to 100Mbps on an ethernet cable?

Reason being is for one cable on a switch, you get a dedicated 100mbit full-duplex speed which means 100mbit each way, whereas air waves in general is a shared medium, so you get, at best 300mbit for the whole neighborhood.
Substract for error correction, or the fact that you neighbor might be using n very soon, and you get much less than that.
If it's just you only use wifi for devices that benefit from it - ie portables like ipad or laptop and try to keep no battery devices plugged with a cable.
If you're super freakish about speed, you can also go for gigabit ethernet cables and if you still need more, you can aggregate multiple links (although that would be plain stupid for home use)Comment

Another advantage of gigabit ethernet is that you can use optical fibre, which lets face it is much cooler than normal cables. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment
