Security updates are the one class of updates they always let you install, legit or not.
If you purchase a legit license there are tools to change the installed key. There's no need to reinstall anything. Google XP Key Changer. Careful to scan for viruses though as this is a popular place to hide trojans.Comment

The WGA license key changer tool I got from Microsoft, and once I told Zone alarm it was allowed to connect to the web, and I logged in as a user with administrative privs it was a doddle. Cost £97, which may be more than you can get it from elsewhere, but I-Iz_loaded
Actually not loaded, but I would pay £20 more for ease of convenience, as my time is more valuable than that taken to tulip around with CDs and USB keys (the EEE has no CD Rom drive)Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.Comment

When it pops up saying you have a non-genuine copy of Windows it will give you the option of buying a license right there and then over the internet. This will activate your copy of Windows without reinstalling anythingComment
