This has been getting good reviews lately and has generated a bit of a buzz.

If you have decent hardware why not install a few distros on a virtual machine. You can also check distros via live CD's.

      I recommend openSUSE.

Of course it's a matter of taste but I prefer dpkg rather than rpm which you find with CentOS and Suse.

There's never a simple answer with Linux is there?

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 in a VM, and that works pretty well.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Ditto, except the VM part. For a free OS, Ubuntu is well worth the money.

I thought 8.10 was a little buggy so I've gone back to 8.04 LTS.

I've now got Kubuntu, and I'm quite impressed. I've noticed some flakiness already, but the GUI is much nicer than Ubuntu (less brown for starters) and much more Windows-like which is good for most of us.

Can't say I understand what the technical difference is, but hey.

Fedora 10 is getting rave reviews by Linux Format...and its the DVD in this month's edition.

I'm running 8.04 of Ubuntu which is stable. CentOS 5.2 which is ultra stable - I use it for my Oracle work...and now I think I'll install Fedora 10 on another server to give it a try.

Ubuntu 8.10 seems to be a dissapointment so I would say go with Fedora 10 and if you like a slick UI - go with the KDE gui option.

I've been running Fedora 10 for a few days on a VM. I'm liking it. Just discovered Ratpoison. Great for devs who hate the mouse.

I never liked the brown of Ubuntu. Always makes me want to top myself.
