Doktor Jons: there is no specific regulation of any CCTV usage, and as such the Data Protection Act is still the most significant legislation that affects the widescale use of CCTV / IP Video systems here in the U.K.; but as with many things legal, it is less than perfect.

A significant percentage of smaller privately owned and operated camera systems are now deemed to be outside the scope of the act, and perhaps more worryingly, deliberate misuse of cameras in a 'residential' environment cannot be redressed by the Information Commissioner, as all domestic cameras are exempt under the current legislation (section 36 if my memory serves).

It seem that there is no legislation or legal requirement.

Unless you fancy trawling through all the footage, I'd look at a motion sensing camera. Otherwise, you could spend ages watching nothing happen.

I have been using a 4 camera system called a DVR2000 for 3 years now. Its a PCI card based system that accepts any Composite video input, so wireless or wired can be used.
I got the card from Ebay (cough) but then replaced the software with an update from this site http://www.duncansonline.ca/cards/PICO1-9/intro.htm.
It can motion detect or run schedules or continuous.

The card cost £15, the cameras are CCD domes from ebay - £35+.

Run it all on an old compaq deskpro on Windows 2003, which is also a DC.
