Working out if a deserialize can deserialize an xml string

Grrr....

Need to try and figure out if a given XML serializer is capable of deserializing a given XML string. At this point I don't know what type it is expected to be.

CanDeserialize works fine - but not if the serialization assemblies are auto generated.

Any XML editor recommendations.

I've used and almost enojyed XMLspy in the past but its a bit pricey for the amount of XML I do.
Any other recommendations from the panel (preferably free)
