Everyone I know that has progressed in the way you desire to went in as a graduate and jumped ship into a different role after a couple of years. Those that have contracted in more specialised roles moved into it from their second or third permie role, when they had some experience in their chosen specialization.

A few have stuck with support and either climbed the ladder into management or taken contract support work for the higher rates.

Perhaps consider getting a permie job to get some experience of whatever it is you want to do?

Yeah, keep out of my fracking way when I'm in a position or waiting on figures etc to come out.

Advice for a Trade Floor Support monkey

    Hi
Just after some advice from anyone who has made the jump from IB/Broking Trade Floor Support into a more specific area. I’ve been contracting doing generic support work for around 7 years, Reuters, Bloomberg, bit of IPC dealerboard and I’m curious to find out if any of you come from this sort of background and how you made the jump into something more niche I’ve been looking at Application Support roles which seem to attract a lot more attractive daily rates but it’s the catch 22 situation of not having much experience with the application, i.e Summit, MarketView.
    Any advice appreciated.

Working...
