I've built a system with about 150k lines of code and 900 unit tests on a P3-1GHz with no problems. Put your dicks away.

No biztalk - just SQL 2000, VS2003, NUnit, CruiseControl.Net and SVN...

My 2 GB AMD x2 dev box is very nice and fast with .NET - strongly recommended to get dual cores, Conroe might be better bet than AMD these days.

I dumped the AMD and went Conroe....it is significantly faster for browsing text only web sites.

Yes like an enterprise sized system where there a several BizTalk servers, lots of webservices, a large amount of test data in many databases and many many NUnit tests to run through before you submit your work into a build.

Then every second you save with a fast PC is time saved to post tulipe on this website.

2.8GHz P4, 1GB RAM, 80Gb disk is perfect if you're just using SQL 2005+VS.Net 2005

Anything else is just cock extension - unless you need to deal with 3rd party crocks such as Buzztalk, Commercial Joke Server or Content Manglement Server

I've managed quite happily on a P3-550 with 256Mb of RAM and a 9.1Gb SCSI disk.

That spec sounds okay until you want to do some development.

Current workstation is an Intel Core Duo E6600 overclocked, XP 64bit, 4 Gigs memory, Nvidia 7600 Ultra, Raptor 10,000 rpm drives in RAID.

Makes coding in notepad bearable. Email is a bit slow though.

nVidia graphics card with dual DVI ports for your 2 monitors. A matching pair of 21 inchers look just grand stat side by side.

If using ,Net then be aware that some things from the UI do not work on a monitor with negative co-ordinates!

I'm looking to buy a new PC for development work (mainly .net sql server etc but potentially others) and I was wondering what spec to go for, I want something that is pretty future proof (as much as I can but I know that things move on etc).

I know that memory is one of the key things so was going for 1gb however it is the rest of the spec that gives me a headache (not being too into the PC hardware stuff), I'm not really bothered whether I have a desktop or laptop but I really want a dual screen setup as I have found it a huge bonus. I have in my mind which brands to go for/ ignore so thats not really an issue, what I am really interested in is the spec
