Have you tried disabling conversation view in the web client and then refreshing to see if it's then propagated to your Android device?

Gmail - disable conversation view in Android app

I've Googled this and it would appear it's not possible.

That means I can't delete an individual message in a conversation - just the entire thread.

Am I missing something?
