If you haven't already sussed it out - Bonjour is Apple's inplementation of Universal Plug and Play (uPnP) which is used to advertise services on a network. iTunes uses it for Home Sharing but it is also used for printers, network shares (Apple ones in particular) and some things around AirPlay/AirTunes.

Avahi is an open source version of Bonjour - all very confusing as Bonjour is a closed-source implementation of an open-source technology!

started a topic What the _heck_ is Bonjour when it's at home?

What the _heck_ is Bonjour when it's at home?

Just downloading cygwin on a client PC, to rebuild WireShark, and when I click the option to install everything, the following window pops up:

Due to Cygwin limitations, this port of Avahi has been patched to rely on a native Windows version of Bonjour's mDNSResponder service.

If you don't already have the "Bonjour Service" installed (it comes with iTunes and Safari among others), then you can download it at Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2
This isn't mentioned anywhere on the Cygwin site, AFAICS, and at first sight it looks as if a vicious piece of malware has hijacked the setup program. (I mean "Responder" sounds to me like a key logger.)

Presumably it is above board, because apart from anything else one assumes an attempt to download malware wouldn't announce itself up front. But I would be interested to know what the hell is going on and what it actually is! Very poor communication by the maintainers of cygwin.

Will I be greeted on logging in each morning by a pop up window saying "Good Morning!".
Working...
