SVN is fine for small teams but is a bitch to merge changes in.
Mercurial is good for small and large teams over multiple projects and branches....a hell of a lot easier to merge projects and branches than SVN.

At ClientCo we use SVN on Windows for dev.
We also use ClearCase on Unix, but personally think that is a dog.
What OSs are being used?

We've been using Mercurial for a while now at Permie Co., and I'm not so sure the upsides really outweigh the down. But it does work, and they have a couple of sites in the US, and three in the UK, and various other people working remotely by themselves, all working off one code base.
Timezones don't come into it, as updating doesn't do anything as crude as comparing time (neither did subversion).
