Unable to save a file & folder with the same name in the same location

However, in my mind, it shouldn't work like this.

A filename sits at the bottom of any folder hierarchy.

Therefore, the fact that I have navigated to the location I would like to save my file and named my file, Windows should credit me (the user) with some intelligence in that I know what I am doing. To me, it comes across as if it is assuming that I wish to save into a folder which happens to have the same name as my file which shouldn't be how Windows works. Right?

I don't recall having this problem with previous versions of Windows and it can be a right pain as I tend to regularly save temp docs to my Desktop which may happen to have the same name as folders on there.

I've used that functionality many times in the past (since windows 2000 at least) to quickly navigate to network folders and I hope they don't get rid of that!

The current method of how it works is also very good for those with no mouse or limited ability to use a mouse as it means you can navigate the folder structure easily without the mouse and not having to tab around the form

What you want to do is (IMO) a special case which is easy to get around if you know what your doing. Personally I avoid giving files or folders in the same folder the same name

the problem seems to be how the save dialogue works and the almost dual function of the "File name" box.

if you type in "Apple" (without the quotes) then it will think you are referring to the folder and just open the folder rather than saving with the name apple and automatically appending the extension.
If you type in "Apple.xlsx" (also without the quotes) it will save it for you with that name

Anyone else experienced this or is in a position to test?

If I have an existing folder on my Desktop called, for example, Apple and I, at some point, create an Excel spreadsheet which I decide to also call Apple and save on the Desktop, Windows won't allow me to save the file. The Save dialogue box stays on screen and I have to re-name the file to enable the file to be saved.

This isn't normal Windows behaviour, is it?

I'm running Windows 7 & Office 2007 and can't seem to find anything on the web which shows others with the same problem and, hence, any possible solutions.
