Right click on the cell (or column header) and pick "Format cells..." from the drop down menu.
Click on Date, then in the middle column the format you want.
40422 comes out as 01 September 2010.

Is there no way you can change the format of that field/column? That figure looks suspiciously like the underlying value saved by the spreadsheet, and all you need to do is set the format that you require?

Excel date changed in OpenOffice
I have been moving all my business files from Win XP to Ubuntu and this included my accounts in MS Excel.
I have opened the accounts xlsx file in open office but am baffled by the listed date format that it shows.
Instead of the 01/01/11 format I used to log accounted items it now shows a five digit number EG: 40422 which I can only assume is a computer generated date marker of some sort.
I can not find a way of changing this back through the spreadsheet software. As it is the date code isn't usable for me. Does anyone know anything about this please?
