It varies on the Wintel platform depending upon the tools that are used. You might want to look at the various ISV sites, such as IBM for TSM on how they go about it. It is quite different to the mainframe arena (where I come from) where you'll probably only use 1 of 3 major tools to perform backups such as DFSMSsms, FDR or the CA one but you'll also have other tools such as HSM in place. A good book I found was Amazon.com: Windows 2000 and Mainframe Integration (9781578702008): William H. Zack: Books

Well done, thanks Chippy for you’re help & prompt response - much appreciated.
I’ll be reading this with interest over the next couple of days to get an overview (and basic understanding) of Wintel systems and to look at strategies in the following areas:-
- Incremental Backup Techniques
- Onsite Backup/Recovery
- Offsite Backup/Recovery – Disaster Recovery
- Data Migration/Recovery
Cheers.

Wintel Data Backup, DR & Archival Strategies – Idiot’s Guide Required
Hi,
I have a mainframe (aka z/OS, zSeries) storage background but I would like to know more about Wintel systems and the system administration role, specifically data backup, DR & archival strategies.
Can anybody point me in the direction of an idiot’s guide.
Many thanksTags: None
