We just kept a cheap DVD player for those and my wifes collection of VCD's which strangely the PS3 won't play.
Still, ripping region encoded DVDs to a PC and streaming them via a media server would get round that problem.

I currently use a PS3 with Logitech Z5500 speakers, Samsung 40", support Iplayer, store photos, video from USB, oh yeah and its a games console too and regular updates from Sony.

Good quality Blu-Ray, DVD upscaling, regular and easy to install firmware updates, 3D output (if thats your bag), media streaming, quiet, looks nice, etc etc etc.

And it does games, iPlayer, web browser.
    WHS

Even if you don't do games, it has enough other media functions to make it a worthwhile purchase.
The PS3 store now does video rental (and purchase). Close to 1000 titles now and many available in HD

You can buy my Sony BDP-S360 off me if you want. That's because I wish I'd bought the BDP-S370 that has iPlayer support.
