My Time Capsule failed at the notorious 18 months-and-it-won't-power-up point, Apple replaced it no problem with a newer version, no fuss.

Other than that, set it and forget it.

The only time I notice it it's cos of it's incredibly bright green 'on' LED, reflects on all the windows in the hallway!

I'm implementing GlusterFS on some barebones server boxes. Easy to expand easy to mirror data across multiple remote locations and does the job for me

I was using a Buffalo NAS but it seems they can be a bit flaky and getting data off them if they die is not as easy as you would think.

I keep everything important on a RAID of about 700GB in my main workstation. That gets automatically backed up to an internal 1TB disk using EMC retrospect, and I periodically make a copy of the backup to an external disk which lives in a different town.

I backup fairly regularly to by Drobo. Expandable storage when you need it - just stick in a new drive or replace an existing one. Does it's own RAIDy type stuff to make data loss less likely.

Connects via firewire or USB, and works on Windows and Linux (although unsupported).

Downside - drive shows up as being the maximum available size (e.g. 16TB) even if you only have a 2TB drive in there - so that when you put a new drive in it, there's not much that it needs to do before starting out.

Mine has 2x 1TB, 1x500GB, 1x2TB drives in there at the moment.

Data Storage reccomendations

I'm currently contemplating a new home desktop.
I was thinking about getting an external hard drive to back up all my important docs () and photos that are currently on my old stream driven pc.

What do the assembled masses do to store photos, documents etc??
I was wondering about saving everything to an external hard drive.
