Well. I;ve managed to get some time to signup for service. I've signed up with VOIPtalk for the moment. I can dial in to my Asterisk server which works ok. Voice quality isn't that great.
But I can't dial out. All I get is circuit busy. I have a feeling that its something with my setup. Though struggling to figure out what it could be. Could it be the router...I've a Draytek 2820.

Anybody here using voiptalk successfully with Asterisk?

I just want somewhere I can nip out to in my lunch hour to get a shiny new Voip phone for my desk. PCWorld don't keep this sort of thing in stock, 3 day lead time. Same for staples.

Prolly have to order on line, but if anyone does know a "high street" retailer where I can get my mits on one today I would be grateful.

Say, wasn't there supposed to be a write up coming. I'm interested in finding out who best to get my SIP truck from as well.
I've got my Duron 1.6Ghz box. put Ubuntu on it. installed Asterix and setup the GUI for it. Setup some extensions so far - but haven't got phones yet to test. I'm looking at buying used ones. Then I'll get a SIP/IAX trunk from someone. Last bit I need is to port my landline number to the VOIP.

Myself & a colleague setup an office with the "Multi Tenant pbx" from these guys a couple of years ago. Worked very well with the Snom phones, was relatively simple to configure and maintain and support from the company when needed was excellent.

Any hardware recommendations for this. I've got a old AMD Duron 1.16GHz available to use. I imagine it will be quick enough for the job.

I just recalled that Draytek make a ADSL router which has built in FXO/FXS ports and a mini-VOIP server inside.
But if it is like my Draytek then the feature set will be minimal.

A local company here does the virtual switchbox thing.
Buy the handsets - either from them or your own.
Pay £10 pcm for each handset, plus the calls
Then extras like number porting, fax-to-email etc. on top
All managed by yourself through a portal

They are doing very well.

Cut out the middle man with on site. Remote support is the key and is chargeable on top of deployment - recurring fees

Might be a Plan C in this. Showed a local company today what I had done already and they're biting. I need to get my head around this a bit more by emulating what a small business might need by doing it here at home, iron out the issues and be able to deploy painlessly.
