It was indeed a messed up partition table order. The bios suddenly reverted to using hda for boot. hda was the old ide disk before the rebuild which still had an old copy of grub on it. So it booted, got as far as looking for a non existent parition and bailed this giving me palpitations.

I booted off a live CD and could see all the drives, including the freshly imaged one although it was now no longer called sda, rather sdb

Then the penny dropped. I booted to bios, fixed the boot order and weyhey.

Still not idea why the BIOS decided to shuffle the boot order on a drive swap though. Considering the machine was never booted with a drive 'missing'

So tired, I'm a mess. Going to bed before I break anything.

started a topic Grub Error 17

    Grub Error 17

Got a hard disk wobble so decided to replace HDD

    took a drive image

    replace drive

    re image

Grub is loading please wait ....
    Error 17

Waited for a bit. Got bored.

It appears error 17 is 'cannot mount partition'

Anyone be of any help? If I replace sda (sata disk 0) and image back to it, should the mount point not be the same?

Working...
