Thanks for the help - I bottled it & restored the full image to another drive, but interesting to see the other options.

What follows may be useless advice, but may give you pointers. It will at least keep you busy until someone comes along who knows what they are talking about.

Generic solution:Backup your PC again as another image.
Restore the image that has the wanted file. Copy it to somewhere.
Restore the most recent image.
Copy the file back.

From here:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -there is a shareware application I use at home to extract files from the "Complete Backup" process. That way I really never need to use the "Individual File Backup" process unless I want to. (which I still do) The program I am refering to is called WinImage. WinImage lets you extract files from .vhd's which is what a "Complete Backup" file will be stored as.

The only tools you will need for this operation are:
· Virtual Server 2005 - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/bb738033.aspx
And to answer your question, no, you can't use Virtual PC, because you need a tool within Virtual Server called VHDMOUNT, a cool little tool that lets you mount a "virtual hard drive" as a local drive on your system.

Yes, was an image using the standard Vista backup & restore software

Presumably it was a drive image type backup. What software did you use to make the backup?

Restore single file in Vista
I have done a full backup of the hard drive - I use Vista.
Stupidly, I moved a file (that I thought I had copied) and made changes to it.
I need to restore the original file.
Is there any clever way of doing this without doing the full windows restore job, i.e just get the one file back off the full drive backup.Tags: None
