I had a similar issue many moons ago. I think just booted from the windows recovery disk and copied it from there.*

* That might be bollocks though, it was such a long time ago.

More Windows related joy...

A friend has a Dell Optiplex 170L Series running WinXPSP2, P4, 2.8GHz, v.A07 Bios.

His daughter somehow borked it. When it starts up it doesn't boot into windows, saying that hal.dll is missing. Error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.Please re-install a copy of the above file."

For some reason, we can't get Windows to boot into safe mode of any kind to replace the file. But we can get to a command prompt using Windows recovery. A little tricky, as I was relaying instructions to him over the phone, but what to do next?

I gave him a replacement copy of hal.dll and boot.ini on a usb key, and we couldn't find the drive letter to DOS copy the file across to the relevant folders. The usb key isn't recognised.

I'm currently downloading a knoppix live CD to try and sort this out, just to get the file in there.

Is there an easy way around this? In simples terms as I'm a Windows numpty btw - not my OS of choice so I don't really understand the issue or the best approach.

Any help appreciated, cheers.
