Who are the nerds of today? The founders of Google must be at the top. What about those Facebook folk?

Triumph Of The Nerds - classic documentary

Anyone else remember this? I remember watching it when it was shown in the UK in about 1996 and found I could remember whole sections of it when I watched again at the weekend. Presented by an American technology journalist who is very likeable. Essential viewing for geeks.

YouTube: Start here and the whole three-hour series is linked (in approx 8 minute segments).

The series ends with the launch of Windows 95, so it's nicely dated itself, but the whole thing is fascinating. Includes interviews and reminiscences from the likes of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, but also loads of "minor players" (i.e. people who actually invented things like spreadsheets and the first graphical user interfaces, but never made any money out of them).

There was a sequel in 1998 which traced the development of the Internet - called Nerds 2.0.1 - but I can only find parts 1 & 2 on YouTube, and that omits the story of Tim Berners-Lee and the Web and the early browsers. Still the first two parts have some great moments, though it's not as, dare I say it, exciting as the original series.
