Yeah I thought that too. That the Passat is somehow "tuned" to reflect channel 7 on the router.

I dunno if the passat has internal motion sensor on the car alarm. But I'll leave the car unlocked one day and see what happens. Wife's taken the car to R'dale today to her other office so won't be able to experiment today.

Now who would have a spectrum analyzer around these parts??? hmmm..

If it is with car stopped (engine not running) then it is not going to be noise from the engine electrics so rule that out.

Did you follow the link basshead provided. That looks very similar.

If it is recent then what has changed? Do you have a regular parking spot or is it anywhere within a radius.

None between us and the router. though there are plenty of weeds around. Only happens with the car though...Then there is the occaision, which I neglected to mention, where I have to shift the bridge a few centimeters to regain signal. very odd. Just wonder if there is a static buildup?

Check the SNR on the router both with and without car present.
Like they said, possibly security device like PIR in car.
Is this when car is running or stopped or both? If only when running then check your HT leads and coil. That would be quite amusing. Your router diagnosing an electrical fault with your car.

Cheers all good suggestions...well the technical ones anyway. haven't checked with car running..but definitly with the car stopped. Its only just happening recently.

The router is on channel 7 at present. I could ask the guys to reboot it which would cause it to set itself onto a another channel. When I scan the networks I can see others not on channel 7 which appear to be pretty stable.

Wifi has a wavelength of about 12cm

Is there something about the car that is less than half this length and which also repeats itself, similar to the metal mesh on the front of the microwave oven. The reason why the oven can have a glass door is because the engery cannot through the holes on the mesh, which are less the half the wavelength.

The problem is describe is most likely interference of some sort especially when you describe the distances you move the car be to improve the signal.

Must be something in your car that is outputting some wireless waves on the same frequency as your router.

Can you change the band used by the router?

I have a really strange wireless problem which has only just started occuring.

We share our internet with our neighbours. Our bridge is placed in the a window in the back office of our building. The router (a BT one) is in another section of the building just on the otherside of a very small car park.

The problem occurs when we park our car...and only our car, anywhere near the opposing wall - the building on the otherside of the car park. The wireless goes out. If I move my car back about 10ft. its fine. And it only seems to
happen with our car. We know its not the router as I can pick up signal from the otherside of the building..whilst we have none in our office.

I've no idea what to do...except park badly in the car park and upset everyone. Anyone out there have any ideas? It only started happening recently. BTW. the car is a ruddy Passat.
