Unfortunately hardware failures happen occasionally, however no mail was lost which proves that the backup system is working perfectly.
I would also point out that the fact hasn't been hidden from anybody. It would be nice if there were never any problems in IT but unfortunately gremlins do find their way in now and again.

mail2web also provides a free MS exchange service, ideal for Symbian and other mobile OS that support mail for exchange, gives you blackberry-like features without having to pay for the privilege.
I forward all my mail from all my domains to my home server which is IMAP, I can access it from anywhere, any device, set up as much filtering/forwarding etc as I like. I forward all my non-subscription personal and business stuff to my mail2web account, makes the phone beep, and if I have to reply using my phone then I connect up to the home IMAP server, hit reply and send through standard SMTP (sending via mail2web free exchange service doesn't allow you to set a different reply-to address from your @mail2web.com one).
I have a domain which redirects to my ISP (Zen) supplied POP3 mailbox, which I then download with Outlook Express on my desktop machine. Zen have a web email interface, but it isn't brilliant, and you can only see the most recent messages.
This all seems a little old fashioned, and makes me wonder if I should switch to an available from anywhere web based system. But I need to look like a professional, not a pikey, so hotmail addresses aren't really on. Neither are ads or any other banners at the bottom of emails. I know everybody was raving about GMail a couple of years back, but isn't that just the same?
Any suggestions?
mail2web has a nifty interface for getting into any pop3 server
That means trusting Google forever, and who knows what might happen to them down the line? And what recourse do you have if they screw up and delete everything?
Well, I don't think they're going anywhere (market cap bigger than quite a lot of countries entire wealth) - but I guess there is no recourse.

That SKA marketing was more effective than I thought.
Google back it up for you so you don't have to worry.

I've been playing with GMail, and it does look quite good, and with IMAP I can sync everything with Outlook Express, even the sent items get duplicated between the two which means I can use either client and have a complete record, which is the main problem with Zen's web email. Also I backup my OE data files, so I get my own backup.
Only thing I don't like is you can't stop them advertising at you whilst you read your email. Or can you?
Can you back up your email yourself from GMail? Or is that why you use IMAP?

Your Gmail inbox is allowed to be something like 10GB so they reckon you never need to delete anything (you can archive mails from your inbox if you so desire).
If you want to back it up, I guess you could use a pop3 client and download it all?
Not quite sure if this is what you're after but I bought a domain (lets call it gadgetman.net) through Yahoo and have my main email address forwarded to my Yahoo account (this is the Yahoo personal address product). By default you get 5 email addresses at your domain.
I can pick this up via pop3 or webmail from anywhere. All of my email is accessible, even via my mobile.
Yahoo allow you to configure it so that the Yahoo address is never seen so my email is alway to and from the domain e.g. [email protected]. This is a paid for service (its peanuts though - $35 per annum) and there are no adverts or indications that Yahoo is involved at all anywhere along the line.
Not bothered about POP3, web only access is fine. But yes, essentially like OWA except somebody else provides the servers, stores and backs up the data etc for a modest fee.
I might have a good look at GMail.
