I went for the Vostro 400 with 2.33Ghz, 2GB Ram, 320GB SATA II, XP Pro and a 19" wide screen monitor. Quite the system and for just £519.00. I think I paid £900 about three and half years ago for not even half this performance.
Went with XP Pro because Vista on my laptop is hardly a showcase for stability.

Inspiron 830 - used it as my permie laptop and getting a new one for my contracting laptop. Never had Dell before but this thing is rock solid, [relativey] light, more than capable as a desktop replacement (I'm also running two dev environments on VMWare Server).
Highly recommended. Dell also offer leasing options if you have your own Ltd.
Danglers.

I have a Vostro, which is now about 2 months old. I bought it as a replacement for my old Inspiron (the screen had developed 2 vertical lines). So far, I'm pretty impressed. The screen is very nice, much brighter and clearer than the old unit, even when running on the battery and in 'Power Saver' mode in Vista.

Vostro vs. Precision
Am looking at two similar systems, aside from bus speeds and memory bits. Is it worth the price difference to go for a Precision. Even if all you do is Oracle and SQL Server and UML?
Then again there is that adage about "buy the most you can afford as it'll only be worth £1 in two years time anyway."
Anyone have any experiences with either or both.Tags: None
