You're right, they no longer require MAC addresses. It's nice to know that at least one service/utility company has decided to make things easier for their customers!

Gus, I've read on self help website that they no longer require people to register MAC addresses - with so many connections it must have cost them more to help people out than possible theft of cable modems.

i went to the blueyonder online centre for registering MAC addresses, but the link doesnt actually link to anything anymore. Nice of them to make it simpler anyway.

it is now working. The problem that I saw was that the router was not getting the IP address automatically. Not too sure which solution fixed it, but I ended up downloading all the latest drivers & firmware. reinstalling the wireless card & setting up the wireless network from scratch, hard-resetting the router, powering off everything & starting again.

hey presto, it all works. porn now accessible wirelessly in the bedroom ;-)

The router should get an IP address almost immediately. Go to www.whatismyip.com/ to check that it is connected to BY properly.
I had a hell of a job setting up wireless with BY on a Linksys router. Have you recently installed SP2? That casued me a few problems.
What wifi adapter are you using? (built in or PCMCIA?)
AFAIK, BY have stopped the restriction on unregistered MAC addresses, but just to be safe, register your routers MAC.
I'll check my setup when I get home, I have probably missed something.

I think I misread the question - is this just a case of being unable to get the modem to connect to the ISP or a general problem with the wireless connection.

With my router you enter the userid and password into the router and it instigates the connection.

If I just shut off the power (we live in the sticks and get the odd short powercut so I've recently put it on a cheapo ups) I sometimes have to unplug the modem from the line for a while before it will connect - I think it must need to timeout as the power-off disconnect is not being properly handled.

Wireless networking just packing up for no apparent reason seems to be a "feature" of XP - I just delete the adaptor and go through the setup again - iirc I'm on Wireless Adapter #7 - I'd advise not checking the box which says something like "Let Windows feck up this connection for you" - use the software that came with the WiFi card.

cable woes

I would want more detail of the setup but an obvious one I have seen on ntl is needing to set up IP address spoofing on the router.

power it all off, then turn on the modem, wait for a minute let it do all its self test etc, then turn on the router let it self test, then the pc.

any blueyonder/cable modem/wireless/XP experts here?

My wireless setup used to work perfectly. Now though, it's gone Kaput (I think i've changed some network settings, when an engineer came round to 'fix' the Telewest setup.

the laptop connects perfectly when connected via a cable direct to the modem.

when i plug the cable into the Edimax 6104 router, and try to use the wireless connection, i cant get through: i can connect to the router via the wireless connection, can change all of the settings on there etc etc. The router can definitelty see the cable modem - there's tons of packets being received. But it canbt set it's time , can't get an IP address .... hmmmm.

any ideas? I've done a hard reset on the router. Should it get an IP address immediately, or does it need prompting from the laptop?
