yeah I will chill out a bit soon thanks. I am prepared to accept that there was a misunderstanding, however my points about ADSL were valid.

Indeed but he claims ridiculous figures for upload being higher than download - as I said design spec specifically optimised ADSL (and 56k) for downloading rather than uploading.

I am personally on Telewest Cable (1Mbit) and I am gutted that they wont offer business tariff for 1-2Mbits upstream - I'd like to host a few things in the house.

Highly recommend it, very stable, nice and fast lots of support.

As to 200 webs, no don't do it. ADSL is 256 upload split between 50 users so it could conceivably be slower than a modem. Many ADSL suppliers limit data transfer, the infrastructure also assumes 50:1 or greater contention ratio .

Get it hosted on an ISP's server, you can hire your own server for very little a month or alternatively sign up as a reseller on a shared server for nothing or very little (depends if you want to pay per site or sign up for a block). If you are interested I can recommend an ISP who can do you a deal, they have fast links and give great support - send me a private with a bit more detail (bandwidth required etc).

I suspect that McBain means that if he hosts the web sites at his location then the access for his customers will be as he states. Because they are accessing him the usual speeds are reversed. His customers will get the higher speed to upload from the web to his servers, and the lower speed to download.

McBainCo: oh yea, really? Where is it such a wonderful ADSL tha thas upload higher than download? Are you aware that one of the fundamental design decisions was to increase download at the expense of upload because in typical browsing people download more than upload? This is precisely the reason why ADSL is not well suited for servers that mainly UPLOAD rather than download.

There is nowhere in the UK an ADSL on offer with your spec (show links if you have any). The best consumer grade will give you 1Mb down and 128-256kbit up.

Download up to 512k, upload is up to 1.5M.

If you mean ADSL for hosting sites at home then you need to consider that its Assymetric - download bandwidth is 512kbit but upload is 128kbit - thats not much.

as ever 'it depends' , but I doubt it. If the 200 sites are just going to be individual homepages with no heavy content then you might get away with it, but if they are going to actually do anything then I doubt it.

All you need is for a couple of people to have largish downloads on there and your bandwidth goes. If you are going to have 200 shops with quality graphics, lots of activity then 512 doesnt last long.

What sort of sites - are you getting the emails down the same pipe, what contention will you get from your isp, etc. Oh and dont forget backup in event of connection problems.

With regards to comms, what is the best solution? Will ADSL suffice?
