If only the spoof ones they had in Viz were real. I personally would have had to have bought the Pope on a Rope and also most of the Sunday magazine style figurines - 'Daddy This Lemonade Tastes Funny' and 'Number 22 $*%t Street' being two that would have stood out on the mantelpiece.

I'm sure there was a bubble gum called "Bazooka Joe" and if I remember correctly inside every package was a really tulip comic strip, but with an ad for a pointless toy such as a kite, or a pup tent or xray specs that you could send for - but only if you sent in a certain number of wrappers.

I don't know of anyone who ever sent off for anything though.

My "black face soap" was very unconvincing and my hot toothpicks weren't at all hot (both from The Krankies Giant Joke Kit). But the itching powder was devastatingly effective.

I'd be very surprised if the "x-ray glasses" really worked.

I bought some of those. I was pretty disappointed. The duck tape, rope and Rhyponol set I got was pretty good though.

I spent several weeks precious pocket money on an "army tent" which was advertised in Warlord comic. I was so, so excited to have bought my own tent and spent ages planning the expeditions I was going to have in it.

Sadly, when it turned up about three weeks later (as things did in those days when sent First Class), it turned out to basically be a carrier bag and a couple of short lengths of cane.

Even now, thinking about it gives me such a feeling of injustice and exploitation that I want to kick a Tory. I'm absolutely certain they were involved somehow.

Anyone remember the adverts they had in old comics. I remember being very disappointed when I got my sea monkeys.
