I'm a flipping softie about old tech too. Couldn't you use the old girl as a small tea tray - if you are having a snack in front of the tv for instance?
Failing that, remove the battery and bury her next to the cat.

Heartless beast. Why not just get a replacement hard drive? Can pick a 4GB one up on eBay for a couple of quid I should think...

If you really do want shot of this trusty machine though you could contemplate burial as long as you take the main and CMOS batteries out. Don't think anything else in there is really a pollutant. Stick it in the garden and plant something on top to mark the grave. If you wanted to cremate then a good blowtorch should make short work of her

My laptop, of 11 years, has finally died. How can I give her a good sendoff?

Since I got her in 1999 she gave good service up until her retirement from active service in 2007, and has now finally surcummed to hard driver-itis in her autumn years (all 4Gb of it). She was a good old bird in her days, so how can I pay her an appropriate tribute for her funeral and, dare I say it, cremation?
