MP Meeting material

I don't think he's signed the EDM. What can I do to prepare for this meeting? Thanks.

The LCAG has a load of material that you can download and take to your meeting. It's called an MP Briefing Pack.

I was extremely fortunate to have met mine having prepared myself with the material - annoyingly I hadn't printed anything out, so if you can, please do - so you can leave the material with them to peruse at their leisure.

It was the best thing I have done so far.

I am hoping to see my MP again, especially now that I have received the HMRC settlement letter. It beggars belief that HMRC actually think that anyone can stump up this amount of cash!

The EDM 1239 against 2019 Loan Charge retrospection is currently up to 97 MP signatures. There are many more MP's who are sympathetic but don't sign EDM's, because they historically haven't done more than to allow people to let off steam. This one will be different because MP constituents are getting face to face meetings with their MP, and pressure is building to translate this into action. At first, many of the EDM signatories had never heard of the Loan Charge and had no idea how this got signed into legislation or the 20 year retrospective aspect. Still less were they aware of HMRC's harsh manner of implementing it.


Now they know. HMRC even actively tried to dissuade MP's from the EDM, yet there has not been a single retraction.

There will be a tipping point...

If you are affected by this and have done nothing (other than read these posts) to help yourself or the cause then go ahead and cry yourself to sleep because the HMRC bullies are winning. 20 years retrospective taxation is total BS, speak to any member of the public and they will agree with you. Yes, be disappointed at yourself that you have been caught up in this mess...but own up to your own actions; the law changed in 2016, settle for anything you took from then and fight the draconian retrospective nature of the LC19. By fighting you are not trying to justify tax avoidance you are sticking up for your human rights!! join the LCAG and get involved.

Back to School...

A concerted effort needs to be put in to lobby MP's offices during August so that when they get back to HoC in September they will all have been put in the picture and just maybe enough of them will discuss it amongst themselves and come to the conclusion that a simple Statutory Instrument is enough to get the Finance Act amended so as to amend or remove the Loan Charge.IMHO the best we can hope for is to limit the retrospection to open years under enquiry and years which they are within time to open.

Four more MPs signed the EDM today. I think there's going to be plenty more yet, although eyes are still firmly glued on Brexit and erm, the definition of anti-Semitism. Maybe the focus will shift as the legal challenge(s) to LC start to emerge. Somehow I don't think it will stop with the LCAG, once that horse is out of the gate. If I were an MP, then come election-time I wouldn't want to be remembered as one who sat on their hands and looked the other way. Nor would I like to come face-to-face with affected constituents while out canvassing.

The reverse also applies to those good men and women who have shown the milk of human kindness thus far. Nothing's forgotten - thank you!

I hear that on this forum a lot, and on several LCAG related Twitter, but the message that HMRC lied about the whole context of the Loan Charge needs to convincingly reach all the MPs that previously voted for the legislation, if there is to be a chance of overturning it. They would also need to understand the wider repercussions of retrospection, in order to change their perspective from HMRC's "not letting them get away with it" rhetoric. I wonder if the 79 MPs that have already signed the EDM are able or prepared to take it further in parliament?

This is the holiday month and probably the quietest time, so I wouldn't expect a significant rise in either MP signatures on the EDM or a jump in public signatures on the public petition until September at the earliest. October will be busy, as it's supposed to be the reporting deadline for outstanding loans, regardless of settlement or loan charge.
