If you leave near Gatwick...
" Gatwick has raised the stakes in the battle for airport expansion in the South East by offering compensation to households likely to be most affected if the go-ahead is given for a second runway.
More than 4,100 homes are expected to qualify for an annual handout to cover council tax payments currently running at £1,000. Hundreds more will be eligible for a contribution of up to £3,000 towards the cost of double glazing and loft insulation.
Gatwick has been shortlisted by the Airports Commission for increasing airport capacity – along with plans for a third runway at Heathrow or extension of one of its existing runways. The commission has also said it would consider a new airport at the Isle of Grain in north Kent.
Gatwick is placing a heavy emphasis on the noise issue in pressing its case for expansion, arguing that its location south of London means fewer people would be affected by the development than a third runway at Heathrow.
The Civil Aviation Authority estimates 3,650 people living in 1,600 homes around Gatwick are currently affected by aircraft noise. The comparable figures for Heathrow are almost 240,000 people in 100,000 homes"
