    Black Rod's Salary in 2010 was £82,900 a year, but as they are all retired flag officers its more of an honour than a chore

    There are 5 "Rods" the most famous being Black Rod, one each for the main orders of chivalry

    The Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod -- Most Noble Order of the Garter
    The Gentleman Usher of the Green Rod -- Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle

    The Duke of Edinburgh this morning received Dame Amelia Fawcett upon assuming the role of Lady Usher of the Purple Rod.

    WTF is that?
