I remember it being quite a jolly affair, it was the united nations of drinking with rollercoasters.
The only hostility I experienced was from some locals who didn't appreciate us stumbling into their 'local bar for local people', one American guy who said he was related to George Bush bought chicken and chips for about 200 people in one after party pub jaunt.

Apart from swiss nazis and very drunken aussies I don't remember it being that bad, seeing police with guns was more worrying when I've been there
And that was from the tourist areas, most of the beer tents seem to be for german business men, and you've got more chance of Merkel invading Poland than seeing a fight there
