Are you joking? I regularly used to complain about the plebs congregating in first class with only a standard ticket. The fast train in from Bath Spa is rammed with them. Same Problem on the way back, there are so many of these pesants hanging round the corridors that the buffet car cannot get through to serve me my evening drinksOriginally posted by TheFaQQer View PostFirst class from Reading to London is usually pretty empty. And you get a muffin too.
seriously if you are wanting to come to the west then consider chippenham or Didcot Parkway, at least you will get a seat.

I live in Chelmsford, my train into Liv street in 32 minutes and not a bad journey. trains run every 10-15 minutes. It's not a bad area. You can get a 4 bedroom detached with a decent garden and walking distance of the station for under £400k

And that train line into London has to be one of the most unreliable. Current clientco has its HQ in TVP and I dread going over on the train once a month - got stuck in Slough station for an hour due to signal failure a few weeks ago. Least you can get your money back if it's over an hourOriginally posted by sasguru View PostTrue. Reading is one of the dullest, crappiest towns close to London.
I live in Zone 2 next to the river so my usual commute into Canary Wharf or the city is only around 20mins

WHS.Originally posted by tranceporter View PostCattle class is like £400 for a monthly season ticket to paddington. First class will be about £800. If you stay in Reading and you need to travel to Paddington daily, your life sucks. Period. Might as well take the slow train to Paddington which takes 55 minutes as opposed to the 25 mins on HST.
Everyone looks like
on that soul destroying journey. £800 a month you could be paying on a London property that will increase in value as the govt encourages more non dom types to buy London property tax free. You may as well get rich with them.

You'll spend a fortune every year doing that.Originally posted by TheFaQQer View PostFirst class from Reading to London is usually pretty empty. And you get a muffin too.
If you bought a house in London instead with all that train fare money paying an almost free mortgage (backed by tax payers and savers), over time it will go up 10x and you can retire to anywhere in the world a billionaire. Probably.

Both trains are full to the brim in rush hour so only worth moving to those places if you can fit in an overhead luggage rack.Originally posted by mudskipper View PostWhat do you want and how much do you want to spend?
Reading's 20 minutes from Paddington.
Woking < 30 from Waterloo.

Hanwell. Mainline to Paddington, or Piccadilly line. It's where my sister has lived for years and seems ok for London.
