The great lottery syndicate scan

I was recently approached by what I thought was a credible / reliable source to invest in a sure fire winning lottery syndicate scheme.

Money was transferred and well said credible source then proceeded to tell the syndicate that over a few lotteries all was lost, there were no winners and it was all a laugh.
