You've kind of made my point for me. In the 1800's the level of medical knowledge worldwide was not as advanced as today. Obviously. So to achieve the age of 40 in the UK was probably the equivalent of 90 or 100 today. Certainly older than other countries in the world, where girls would drop sprogs at 14, and die when those sprogs themselves were sprogging at the same age.

"Poverty" in the victorian era was no worse than ordinary life in less well developed countries in the world.

You are a cliche of the UKIP demographic : the middle-aged, poorly-educated, lower-middle class male.
That is why UKIP won't really get very far - there's a limited amount of you.

You are probably so high up the social ladder that you can't see to the bottom. But the more people I talk to and meet, the more I realise that having a decent education and being able to distinguish between an opinion and a fact are very rare commodities indeed. I've given up arguing with lefties as they simply cannot get beyond Thatcher the Milk Snatcher and the Eton connection. For them, that's it. Cut and dried. Obvious 'innit. They either forgive or overlook everything about the years under Bliar and Brown.

I think the reason that UKIP won't get very far is because most Labour voters see UKIP as just another type of Tory, but nastier and more racist. And I think the demographic you refer to mostly vote Labour.
