Yes it is normal, particularly if you are working in Front Office.
The enforced holiday is aimed at traders to give someone else the chance to find all your dodgy dealings while you are away.
I need to check my current HSBC contract re the 25 days hols as I haven't seen that or heard from my manager, although a fellow contractor asked me about it the other day.

I just cannot see the reasoning for the 1 year ban, once you get to jedi master in your role they throw you out the door and replace you with a complete novice.

Not just investment banks. Lloyds have a 2 year limit on contractors in their IT Division and DWP have a 12 month limit
