Oh well. His loss.Originally posted by Platypus View PostYeah, I agree, but it's not my PC, my brother's. He won't spend £99 on the upgrade.
As I say, Vista download is on the link I gave to the Dell Community downloads site. The serial number for the install is on the sticker Dell attach to the laptop, so you should be all set to go now.

Vista failing is the best news both you and your PC could have wished for. Time for a bit of this:
Or if you are completely mad, get Vista from here: Dell Community

The hard drive is knackered, trust me. I know what I'm doing.Originally posted by Paddy View PostAs a first step you need to remove the hard disk and put it in a caddy with a USB.
Connect it to an old XP machine.
Open up a command prompt
From the c:\ run chkdsk /r e: (or whatever you caddy drive is)
Run the same for chkdsk /f
Run the above for for f: (or whatever the recovery partition is)
This may take 8 hours
The drive should now work
If it does not, use Linux to make a MBR and then access the recovery partition.
In my opinion; dump Vista and use Windows 7

I have an Inspiron 1525 I'm trying to re-image but I can't "boot" the recovery partition :-(
I think I need the CD for this. TIA.
