IMO driving any VW apart from the old air cooled type is a sign of lack of imagination. And having seen how Audi treated me when my dsg gear box self distructed after 40k miles I would avoide flash unnecessary toys like twin clutches.

The little fiat abarth 500s look really good fun and if not one of them I'd go for something with a v8 lump and 3 years old

Pished off. Been looking for a nice motor for myself (me + missus currently share a car). Trouble is that the missus has only just passed her test, also has little money for herself. Which means if i want a nice car for me i either have to let her drive it (noooo f'ing way) or we have 2 cars, which means i pay for both :@

Easiest way to lose money is buying a new car.

If you want to lose less money, buy something German, prestige, and 2/3 years old. It would have spunked most of its depreciation, and will be bullet proof.

Range Rover is £85k+ in 4.4V8 guise. 3 years and it's 30-35. 6 years and it's 20-25 (I know not German, but it's prestige and fits the bill)

    GL420 is 80k. 3 years on, it's 35. 6 years and its about 25

    X5 is over 50k new. 25k after 3 years, 15k after 6.

E320CDi is all the car you'll ever need, especially in Estate mode, and it's 15-18k after 3 years, down from 45k. Be worth 12k after 6 years.

    335i coupe. 45k new, 15k after 3 years.

There are some tasty cars out there, for less than you need to spend. I would prefer a 3 yo 335i then a new Polo gti and still have enough to chip it to 380bhp and have a holiday.

The only thing that is ever true with modern cars, is that you'll always lose money in the first 3 years, and sometimes lots of it.

P.S. Citroen C6 is an excellent car, 40k new, and after 3 years, you can buy a good low mileage one for 12.

How about a genuine classic, a real man's car - the V8 Jensen Interceptor hand-built in West Bromwich
in the 70s by 'ard men .. British hairy chest not Euro metrosexual waxed

Women run away scared from that beast.
Shame it breaks down every five yards.

It would be a sad forum if everyone kept ones opinion to oneself. However there is a difference between expressing an opinion and trying to convince someone else of it. I dont feel the need to convince a stranger on the internet of anything, what would be the point of that?

You are right there. Ive been using the internet long enough to realise you are just a sad old man with nothing going on in his life, who feels a little alive if he can get someone to argue with him. So I'll just agree with you, and deprive you of what little enjoyment left to you in these last few years.

The Polo looks great, I love the idea of a sporty automatic that will make the constant red light driving of commuting bearable, still have a bit of omfff on the motorway and get 48 mpg in petrol!
