'Champagne' currency trader Alex Hope held in FSA investigation
The 23-year-old who made his name as much for partying as for business was arrested by City of London Police together with the Financial Services Authority.
Earlier this year Mr Hope featured prominently in the media when he splashed out £125,000 on a giant bottle of champagne. Reports suggested he was partying with Manchester City footballers Joe Hart and Adam Johnson at the Playground Club in Liverpool.
The FSA said: “With the assistance of the City of London Police, the Financial Services Authority today executed a search warrant at one address in East London in connection with an investigation into a suspected unauthorised foreign exchange trading scheme.
“A 23 year old man was arrested on suspicion of committing offences under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and the Fraud Act 2006.”
It is understood no-one has been charged in connection with the investigation.
The FSA said: “No further details can be confirmed at this time. The arrest is not linked to any other FSA investigations.”
On his website Mr Hope describes himself as a “a talented, charismatic and thoroughly likeable man”.
The website also claims Mr Hope is a “name to watch out for in the city; an expert in the UK economy, he works the currency markets, regularly trading millions.”
As well as trading his own money Mr Hope is understood to run regular training sessions where he trains private investors how to trade the markets.
Yesterday his spokesman declined to comment.
