The Mac version was about half price of the Winders Home/Student version the last time I looked.

Just checked again, and you get a family pack for about the same price as the Windows version.

Any cheap/free open university courses that throw in a free suitable email address?

Easy, get a contract at a university then use your client co .ac.uk email address

Alternatively, become a student. I get a uni email address as I'm doing a part time masters.

Because with M$ you need a licence key to activate the software in most cases.

Seen a few Software for Student deals (e.g. Windows 7 for sod all) but apparently they check if you either have a student email address or have a kid at school (by checking with the school).

Not sure if they really do check but suspect they must do otherwise people would have been smugging all over the internet about getting 'legit' software on the cheap.

Not strictly true, I've ordered Office for Mac 2011 with a standard email address ~ £39.

In almost all of the cases, there are inferior free, or cheap alternatives - LibreOffice, Pixelmator/GIMP, if you can't live with the limitiation, just pay the full price and put it thru expenses...
