Just been watching the Frazier/Ali fights. And also saw the This Is Your Life (1978) Ali tribute, where Frazier turned up, 'enry was there and Joe Louise made an appearance too. Frazier died today, but Ali was a big part of his story, and visa versa.
I think he punched like that because he seriously hurt somebody in his early career. Not sure if it was a brain damage or killed, but I am sure he was afraid to unload afterwards.
I do remember that. However, his style on the attack was a bit strange.
Starting in his early years as a professional and continuing for the rest of his career, Bugner earned a reputation as a tough, durable but often exceptionally defensive and cautious boxer. He was criticized often for lacking natural aggression in the ring. Some observers argued that Bugner's heart was never in boxing after an early opponent, Ulric Regis, died from brain injuries soon after being outpointed by Bugner at London's Shoreditch Town Hall.
Although I'd add he punched from his elbows rather than his shoulders too much and looked a bit girly.

Bugner was under rated. Good boxer, but not aggressive enough in the ring. Almost looked unwilling to use his big punch. Not surprising after one of his early fights, but if he wasn't willing to fight then he should have got out of the game.

I also missed out Brian London and several other British horizontal heavyweights. Although Bugner was big, strong and orthodox and in another era might have won one of the heavyweight titles.
Smokin' Joe wus a giant among... er, other giants.
What an era Liston to Foreman was, including Clay/Ali, Frazier, Terrell, Norton, Patterson, Bonavena, Quarry, Ellis, Williams, Folley, Mathis, even Cooper and Chuvalo.
