There's a few houses in Milton Keynes that were built with nuclear shelters under them. I looked round them before they were sold off.

No, nothing like anything shown so far.
This is a top-of-the-range brick built air-raid shelter buried maybe 5 feet into the ground. The Rolls-Royce, if you will, of personal protection from air-delivered explosive devices (for it's time).

You've got a dug in compost heap?Originally posted by bless 'em all View PostI've got something similar at the bottom of my garden.
Built in 1940 using ecologically sourced bricks and concrete this compact yet functional space has been designed for four occupants. With it's space saving bunk bed arrangement the available space has been maximised to allow for day-to-day activities, as well as sleeping.
Surrounded by earth on three sides it remains a comfortable 20c all-year-round and comes with running water (down the walls) and no electricity.
Any offers?

Imagine the chaos the would ensue if people were to realise that better houses could be built by digging a hole in the ground or by stacking straw bales. Day's work + £50, versus a tulip box leaking to the elements and taking a lifetime to pay for. The only thing that prevents this is a massive ruling class conspiracy against the proles.

Laws of thermodynamics probably mean that its quite warm because the house will take heat from the earth in the side of the hill rather than leak it out of walls that are against the cold airOriginally posted by conned tractor View PostI quite like myself. I do wonder what the u values are as to whether they'd be warm enough in winter. Now, if only people could actually build on land they owned, that'd send house prices tumbling.
Hobbit-able
3k for a house seems like a good use of land.

Is that pond to scale? If so, it's about the size of a kitchen sink.
