How did you get on with the MPS (I am considering one for my next car)?

I've read that they are comfortable and fast, but perhaps a bit boring?

In my opinion of course. Ignore the fact that it will almost certainly break down, let your heart overrule your head.

But I fancy getting a nice new car.
Nothing mainstream, no BMWs, Audi or Mercs, too ubiqitous.
What's a good leftfield alternative? Or do we lack any choice iin the matter?

A shed on wheels should do nicely then.

I'm not a fan of BMW's image but this has to be the best car money can buy for combination of fun VFM and running costs.

BMW 335i | evo Car Reviews | Car Reviews | evo

The latter versions are under 200 g/kg co2, so £200 road tax and will average over 30mpg, by all accounts bmw had to detune it not to outdo the M3. The 335d probably makes even more sense as is almost as fast but does 40mpg. I can't see anything else that offers the quite same at the moment.
