Anyhow I'm not sure why they'd need Java developers out there. I thought it was all combine harvesters and cider.
BT used to have an office there.

I quite enjoyed a short stint in Ipswich (not at BT).

Following on from my previous I find that most people are smart enough to understand they need to specialise but when the masses are doing this with a view that they cannot outsource this to Bob it has the effect of driving down the rates.

Just type your selected any <wish> career path into jobserve and it is going to give you a reasonable view of the market. Even though I see it is tough for most people including the Bobs to beat me for the jobs my rate it pretty much now dropped to where it was in 2000. This means working in banking which is most probably the most sh1t area to find yourself. Littered with demi Gods and ego's of tw@ts of the highest order who think they are actually good. sh1t and I thought as I got older life would get easier, wtf happened

    Yes.

Very unusual for a rural area. Basically you've been overpaid for the market. Nice if you can get it - and well done for making it last for a few years. You might also be lucky/skillful enough to land another one at the rate. But it ain't the market rate for Ipswich.

I've just started a new job on the best rate I've ever been on. However that could mean:

All my previous rates were crap

Bobs aren't yet into what I do

To take on all that for £30K you'd have to be a tribble.

(unless it was a stepping stone for bigger and better things elsewhere)

Yeah I have seen that happening, however I think more and more clients are seeing that open source + bobs != cheapness in the long run. The plus side is they hire you to sort it out.
