Suprising, given the inflationary policy and measures to curb immigration by, for example, increasing the number of ICTs. His genius though was in not including these in the immigration figures

I can believe that. It's good to hear that he's recovering, but an attack like that's bound to leave a mark not just physically.

Deportation after jail fits the crime and I agree it was an avoidable situation.

He is fine now, thankfully. And it is almost impossible to make out the scarring. So a very lucky escape, but a situation that need never have arisen.
This illegal had major issues and stabbed himself in the stomach whilst at school over some girl dumping him. All very sad but not really our problem. We have plenty of homegrown youngsters that don't have all their oars in the water without letting thousands more flood in to overload the system.

Immigrant who posed as school boy jailed for broken bottle attack on teenagers

    Niamat MiahBy staff reporter newsdesk@heraldexpress.co.uk

A man who posed as a 15-year-old schoolboy in South Devon has been jailed for four years for attacking two youths with a broken bottle.

Niamat Miah, now aged 20, was 19 when he told the authorities he was a 15-year-old schoolboy named Sabbir Ahmed. In fact, he was an illegal immigrant who had been left in the UK by his parents. He attended Dawlish Community College and South Dartmoor Community College.

At Exeter Crown Court yesterday he was sentenced to four years in prison for smashing a beer bottle and thrusting it into the face and neck of two teenagers.

Sentencing him Judge Philip Wassall said: "You have told so many lies throughout the investigation. Not only have you lied to police in trying to wriggle out of being held responsible for what you did but also to the court."

Miah now faces being deported to his home country.

The incident happened on June 10 last year when a drunken Miah got into an argument outside the Take 2 bar with Chris SB, Lawrence Manders and a small group of girls.

Prosecutor Sean Brunton said when the argument escalated Miah phoned his older brother Liakat Miah who was working at a nearby restaurant. Liakat grabbed Mr Manders around the neck and threatened him, the court was told.

"The defendant picked up a beer bottle and smashed it on the pavement then thrust the stump into the face of Chris SB cutting him around the left eye," said Mr Brunton. "A few seconds later he picked up another, smashed it against railings of the bar and made a slashing motion across the throat of Lawrence Manders cutting him across the throat area."

Both victims suffered cuts but no lasting injury. Miah ran from the scene but was caught by police. He told them he had been the victim of an attack but this was a "figment of his imagination", said Mr Brunton. When arrested he pretended to have a fit to "muddy the waters" said Mr Brunton.

Miah was arrested as Sabbir Ahmed.

Defence counsel Jo Martin told the court punches had been thrown on both sides and her client had felt aggrieved.

She said he had previously suffered mental problems and had tried to injure himself.

Miah, who was 19 at the time of the offence, admitted two counts of unlawful wounding.

Miah, of no fixed address, was sentenced to four years in a UK jail before deportation.

Illegal immigrant 'misled community' with web of lies

The cost of uncovering Niamat Miah's true identity and bringing him to justice is estimated by police to be in the tens of thousands of pounds.

It took months of close working with the UK Border Agency and social services.

Miah also slowed the legal process by insisting his real name was Sabbir Ahmed and that he was just 15 years old.

The court was told he had arrived in the UK in 2006.

After the hearing DC Jon Croft said at the time of the incident the defendant was studying at South Dartmoor Community College as Sabbir Ahmed.

He said Ahmed had previously been admitted under the Mental Health Act for stabbing himself in the chest while a student at Dawlish Community College.

When arrested the defendant was found in possession of an identity card and checks with the UK Border Agency linked it to a visa application and the name of Niamat Miah.

That started a lengthy legal process in which police tried to confirm Miah's real identity.

There were several court hearings and DNA samples confirmed Niamat Miah and Liakat Miah were brothers.

Earlier this month Judge Graham Cottle ruled there was overwhelming evidence the defendant was not who he claimed and should be tried as an adult.

Instead of standing trial Miah pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.

Judge Wassall said: "You claimed before the court to be a different person. You misled the community for years that you were that person and that age."

It's understood Miah first enrolled at Dawlish Community College using false Home Office papers which indicated he was 13 years old when in fact he was 17.

Miah left Dawlish Community College and enrolled at South Dartmoor where he attended the sixth form.

Devon County Council and Dawlish Community College had no comment to make regarding the former pupil.

At the time of writing, South Dartmoor Community College were unavailable for comment.

Brother Liakat was arrested at the Taj Mahal restaurant in Teignmouth and later convicted of a public order offence in connection with the GBH.

    He has already been deported.

VAT is very predictable revenue stream and because it is charged on consumption it is hard to avoid it (macro-economically speaking).

andfor example if a gas fitter quotes, say, £3000 for labour you pay in cash and save £600 VAT (and the fitter pockets the cash, ta very much guv!)

    "No tax please, we're British"

No, it's not - 2.5% extra bring in like 20 bln or so and it is very hard to avoid it. Increase in inflation is the main downside but given it is going up so fast then it is the best time to do it.

Now the real stupid thing was to drop VAT to 15%.

UK public finances suffer worst April on record - Telegraph

Raising VAT to 20% was a very stupid idea IMHO. Anyone who possibly can pay cash will make extra efforts to do that now, because it's so easy to see how much the VAT would be (divide the total by 10 and double the result!) And anyone paid in cash will doubtless often pocket the lot, without declaring it.

More and more people will get into this habit, of necessity. So the Government is entrenching an ever larger black market.
