It has mostly just added a variable on the "I'm looking in this area to but a house" equation for the uptight middle class.

Ah, but using a bit if reverse psychology; the reason those properties haven't been burgled yet is because a) there's nothing of value there, or b) the houses are very secure, or c) the owners fight back. So the 'already burgled' could be getting another visit.

Mix in a little bit of Royal Mail postcode data with socio economic indicators, overlay with 192.com, upmystreet, Google streetmap and low and behold you can work out who has the best houses, who has kids, when they're going on holiday, check out their security systems and know if it's worth doing over.

Of course, if you could do all that you wouldn't be wasting your time doing over houses you'd be working as an IT Contractor!

I think there's a lot to be said for living in an area like mine, where most of the houses in my area cost upwards of £2M and that's oop north.

Most good areas of Britain were targeted post war by the socialists to have housing schemes built next to them to basically dilute the conservative electorate.

In Scotland we got that at its most severe, Conservatives got, I think 24% of the total vote in the last election and got one out of 69 MPs.

There are 2 or 3 million pound houses within a short walk from my house but go for a short walk in the other direction and there are tower blocks filled with nutters.

That's something I always noticed was different about Edinburgh. The only dodgy parts of the inner city are Leith and Gorgie. The poor have been pushed further and further out into the schemes creating ghettos that you really don't want to go near, but making the city centre and surrounding areas nice places to live. The revitalisation of Leith will gradually make it unaffordable to most of its current residents. It seems like a good idea until you set foot somewhere like Broomhouse or Pilton.

There have been quite a few murders round our way in recent years, but then I do stay in the most violent city in Europe. The police are useless are best and still have not solved the last one from a few months ago.

The highlight how bad the police are in my area someone got stabbed to death right outside the local police station, the culprit threw the knife on top of the bus shelter outside and it was not found for weeks.

That is just an epic fail.

Same sort of thing near me. A neighbour was stabbed in his house and 'stored' in his own wheelie bin afterwards. Bits of him were found on the rubbish tip following bin collection. Not solved.

Hmm. I'm in an oop North city-centre flat. Around me there are 3 centres for drug addicts, a well-scary YMCA, various charity 'offices' (converted townhouses) for people with bugger all except problems, and the like. And the crime stats are quite low.

But wander off a few hundred yards toward the shopping precinct (ASBO territory) or the train station car park (robbery) or the night clubs (violent crime), and the stats shoot up.


Our neighbours seem to comprise a mix of a minority of working professionals and a majority of drug addicts who frequent the drop-in centres and the chemist on the corner which has a methadone dispensing room (and a permanent queue).

Mrs RC & I have been speculating for some time whether it is because we are living in the middle of a community of methadone-filled people that makes this area the strangely quiet and peaceful place it is. Possibly because it keeps trouble-makers away!

The stoned middle-aged punks that stand and sit around in the street are certainly more cheerful and friendly than many of the suburban families we have lived amongst. And, presumably, they have nothing much worth nicking anyway.

Maybe Prawn, maybe, but the difference is that I suspect I'm a bit younger than you and still want to be able to go out and socialise with friends somewhere with a decent nightlife. Once I settle down I'll probably move to somewhere boring too.
