It was the curse of Rasputin that got him

Rasputin was murdered on the night of December 29 to 30, 1916 in St. Petersburg

    One word - greed.

There are corporate parties in Russia in firms that get rich by selling overpriced fuel to the West and they spend it lavishly on singers who fly over to sing at those private parties - he probably stood to make a few hundred grand for one performance.

Presumably it was somebody else who was really performing.

"Ra ra Rasputin, lover of the Russian Queen, there was a cat, who really was gone". They don't write em like that anymore.

Not to everyone's taste, but Boney M (NME usually referred to them as Money B) were sometimes entertaining.
