On first reading it seems quite silly, but it does make sense when you think about it. Aircraft and lots of military vehicles have armoured seats.

Genuine coffee+keyboard moment when I read that article - but after reading it, surprised they haven't had this sort of kit as standard issue for a while. Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere.
