No matter what the price of oil is, or how much tax is levied, or how much profit the oil companies make, travelling by car will always be cheaper than public transport.

Not necessarily cheaper but definitley better for your sanity. Having said that the 15 min train from wilmslow - crewe beat the car journey in time (1 hour) and price (8.60 ticket vs 12.00 petrol/30.00 mileage)

I can bet your not a programmer as it seems u can't even do some basic maths. It works out around 45-50mpg.

Which gave me the answer of

I invested in a 54 plate Golf Tdi (50k miles) before my current contract started as I would be doing on average 120 miles a day (varies due to the different motorways I take depending on the traffic).

I manage to do aprox 550 miles on a full tank of £70. I imagine I am doing a bit of saving there which should compensate for cost of the car (not to mention the cheaper road tax, insurance and maintenance).

So sometimes it can make sense to get a new(er) car provided it doesnt cost you an arm and a leg.
